Fryštát is the historic centre of Karviná, on the Olše River. Written records mention Fryštát as early as 1305. The Faculty of Business Administration of the Silesian University is based at University Square in Fryštát.

The Empire-style Fryštát Chateau stands by Masaryk Square and is open to the public, with period interiors. Božena Němcová Park adjoins the chateau; it was established in 1804 as a castle park. The parish Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands by the chateau, and a covered passage connects it to the chateau building. The Church of St Mark, dating from the 18th century, also stands in Fryštát.
