Hlučín lies on the Opava River, about 10 km north-west of Ostrava. It is the centre of Hlučínsko. In 2025, it had around 13,400 residents.
Hlučín was probably founded around 1256 by Přemysl Otakar II. The oldest surviving town charter dates from 1303. Hlučínsko was part of Prussia from 1742 to 1920 and became part of Czechoslovakia on 4 February 1920.
