Velká Polom lies in the Ostrava-město District between Ostrava and Opava. The first written mention of the village dates to 1288.

The Church of St Wenceslas has a Gothic presbytery dating from the late 13th century, a Renaissance nave from 1589 and a Baroque tower from 1741. The church is surrounded by a former cemetery with an enclosing wall from 1857, which incorporates four chapels. The water fortress of Milotička, documented since 1486, was badly damaged in fighting in April 1945, and only its ruins remain today.
